What does our Buying team do?

We partner with all areas of the business, utilising our market knowledge of current trends, to continually develop and buy a fantastic range of products suitable for our Customer. The Customers’ requirements are at the heart of everything we do, therefore not only trend but quality, affordability and speed to market is really important to us.

The Role:

To put the customer requirements at the centre of the product offer by working collaboratively and strategically with the departmental Head of Merchandising and Head of Design.
Full responsibility for the delivery of sales and profit targets for your department, along with executing a considered product strategy. Leading, developing and engaging your Team to meet the departmental KPIs. Deputises in the absence of the Buying Director.

Key Responsibilities:

Planning & Buying
• Full understanding of the business strategy and how that may impact your Departments
• Delivering  the Buying strategy for the departments or sub departments to maximise sales and profit targets against forecast and budget in conjunction with the Head of Merchandising and the Head of Design
• Managing weekly product sign-off process, including awareness of impact on Open to Buy (OTB), gross profit margin and flexibility
• Using sales and performance information to steer the Buying team, to maximise opportunities and minimise the risk of poor performing trends
• Reinforcing the Brand by ensuring the desired quality standards for fabric, colour and fit are achieved
• Identifying promotional and Marketing opportunities for the Product Groups / Brand and feeding this into the trading calendar
• Demonstrating an exceptional awareness of  competitors and external trends, identifying missed opportunities and future trends
• Full understanding of the Department’s current Customer insights, Market Share and opportunities
• Applying New Look brand and sub-brand strategy to product and ranges within department of responsibility

• Continually striving to improve upon and build mutually effective supplier relationships
• Identifying new sourcing opportunities and providing focused, clear development direction to the current supplier base
• Developing a sound supply policy for the Brand, striving for consistent best practice partnerships

• Strategically managing the Critical Path from concept through to Buying, reacting to market changes and challenges
• Reviewing current sales with the Head of Merchandising, reacting appropriately to maximise sales opportunity whist predicting emerging trends to increase market share
• Analysis of trading patterns, advising the teams and ensuring the appropriate action is taken with regards to unforeseen sales reactions
• Leading on Product, Suppliers, Best /Worst sellers within the business area and across other business areas

• Translating the BMD vision into clear goals and objectives for your direct reports and their teams
• Providing positive leadership, supporting New Look’s strategy and encouraging others to do so
• Ensuring the Team buys a commercially viable Product Range that reflects the brand image and incorporates current trends
• Leading the Team in range development by ensuring the product reflects the brand strategy, the range is without gaps and duplication and the season is logically and commercially thought through
• Pre-empting  the need for and managing change, supporting teams through the process
• Building, retaining and developing a high performing stable team with an emphasis on succession planning, identifying top talent and potential flight risks
• Developing the skills of the Team by identifying individual training needs and encouraging effective teamwork, working in partnership with your Talent & Development Partner
• Providing individual support to Senior Buyers and Buyers specific to their level of experience, their time in the business and their current performance levels
• Motivating and engaging the team, along with identifying ways to recognise and reward colleagues in collaboration with your HR Business Partner

About you

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Senior Buyer / Buying Manager  or currently a Head of Buying for Accessories within a major retailer
• Ability to review sales data and take considered actions based on the findings
• Strong numerical and analytical skills
• Strong understanding of supply chain issues / cost – (e.g. product lead times/ flexibility/ supplier capability)
• Understanding launch plans, phasing and sale dates
• Customer focused knowledge of markets and trends
• Exemplary influencing and negotiation skills
• Excellent leadership skills
• Demonstrable experience in Team development and succession planning
• Timely conflict management
• A strong knowledge of the New Look brand and target customer
• Experience of operating in an unstable economic climate
• Proven experience of managing internal and external stakeholder relationships effectively
• Impeccable interpersonal / communication skills
• Resilience and the ability to work in a fast paced environment and adapt to rapid change
• PC literate - Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Outlook
• Product development
